STREET LEGALIZATION

General Street Legal Questions

My title/MCO (Certificate of Origin) says off-highway/off-road only, can you still register it?

Yes, we can! That's what we're here for. All off-road vehicles come with a certificate of origin (MCO) which will state something similar to "off-road only." This normally prevents you from getting it registered unless your state has a process to convert off-road vehicles to street legal.

The states we work with are still able to register your vehicle even though your title/MCO says "off-road only." You won't even need to get your vehicle inspected for the street-legal parts.

Can you register/make (ANY) vehicle street legal?

As long as your vehicle has a serial number and you have at least a bill of sale, we can register your vehicle.

Can I get a tag/license plate from MY (ANY) state?

If you are in one of the states listed below then you may be able to get a plate in your state with a vehicle inspection or trip to your DMV. Keep in mind that laws are always changing so this could change at any time.

DIRT BIKES

-AZ, CO, MI, MT, NC, ND, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT

ATV's/UTV's

-AZ, MI, ND, NC, SD, UT

If you are not in one of these states, then you will have to get an out-of-state plate due to your state's guidelines. That's where we come in. We can handle the entire process for you to get a license plate and registration and you just have to simply renew it each year online through our site.

What if i get pulled over?/Will I get pulled over?

If you were to get pulled over, you will simply show your valid license, registration, and insurance and explain the vehicle is registered out of state and has all of the necessary street-legal equipment.

They will also be able to run the plate on their computer to verify that the vehicle is in fact registered to you.

Do I have to transfer the title/registration to MY (ANY) state after using your services?

In many states, there is a rule that says you are supposed to transfer the plate to your state after 30 days, however, this rule is rarely enforced. You can also get around this rule by registering the vehicle under an LLC, which we can also handle for you for if the vehicle is not financed. You can read more about this service HERE.

While you can transfer the title to your state, you may receive an off-road title/registration unless your state has a process to register vehicles on the road that were originally made for off-road use only.

For this reason, we recommend keeping the vehicle registered out of state and simply renewing it online each year through our website.

Is it illegal to have my vehicle registered out of state?

In many states, there is a rule that says you are supposed to transfer the plate to your state after 30 days, however, this rule is rarely enforced. You can also get around this rule by registering the vehicle under an LLC, which we can also handle for you for if the vehicle is not financed. You can read more about this service HERE.

Can I transfer the license plate/tag to another vehicle?

The DMV will issue a new license plate and registration and will require you to go through the process again, which we can handle for you for a $25 discount.

Is a motorcycle license needed?

For dirt bikes and ATV's, a motorcycle license IS required. If you straddle the seat and the vehicle has handlebars, you will need a motorcycle license, even if the vehicle has 3 or 4 wheels.

Unless you are in NY, or MA, if your vehicle is 3 or 4 wheeled, such as a UTV or Polaris Slingshot, then no motorcycle license is needed. You will simply need a standard driver's license. You can read about this HERE.

What if I don't have a title for my off-road vehicle?

If you don't have a title, we will just need a bill of sale to register your vehicle. On our website, simply select the bill of sale option as your proof of ownership, unless you are financing the vehicle. If you're financing, you will select the financing option.

You can easily get a title here →

What state will the license plate/tag be from? I am in (ANY) State.

You can choose the state we register your dirt bike in, depending on the vehicle type, engine size, and paperwork that you have for the vehicle.

If a vehicle is already registered as street legal in (ANY) state, can I transfer it to MY (ANY) state?

In most cases, just because a vehicle is registered in one state, doesn't mean it will transfer to your state. Many states don't have a classification for street-legal converted vehicles, so it's best to keep the vehicle registered out of state and simply renew it online each year.

However, if you are in one of the states listed below then you should be able to get a plate in your state. Keep in mind that laws are always changing so this could change at any time.

If you are not in one of these states, then that's where we come in. We can handle the entire process for you to get an out-of-state license plate and registration.

Can you register a vehicle with a lien/financing?

Yes, as long as you are the one financing it and the bank is not Synchrony, unless you have the title or certificate of origin (MCO) in hand, then we can register it no matter the bank.

If it is financed under someone else's name, they are the legal owner of the vehicle and we will have to work with them to register the vehicle.

Why don't you work with Synchrony bank?

Synchrony bank won't allow you to transfer your title out of state without proof of residency in that state, which is NOT required by the DMV. This is a process that needs to be done in order to register your vehicle.

However, if you have the title or certificate of origin (MCO) or title in hand, then we can register it for you even if the bank is Synchrony.

As an alternative, you can pay off the vehicle by getting a loan through a company like Lightstream or simply switch to a different lienholder.

Is insurance required?

For dirt bikes and ATVs, that will depend on your state's motorcycle laws. Most states require motorcycle insurance if you are driving your bike on the road.

For UTVs and Military vehicles, insurance will be required.

You will need a policy from your state that covers you for road use with the minimum requirements. To check out our recommended insurance options, click here.

Are there any inspections?

There are no vehicle inspections to verify that the street-legal parts are installed. However, your vehicle may require a VIN inspection if it meets the criteria below. A VIN inspection is just to verify that the VIN hasn't been tampered with and that the vehicle is not stolen.

-All Military Vehicles

-UTV with a bill of sale only, unless financing

Can I get a ticket for driving my vehicle on the road after it's registered?

While you can get a ticket, it is unlikely as long as you are following all of the guidelines such as vehicle equipment, insurance, and a valid driver's license. Unfortunately, cops can interpret the law however they'd like, but in most of our clients' cases, the tickets get thrown out in court.

We recommend registering your vehicle under an LLC if it's not financed to avoid the 30-day transfer window in your state. We can do an LLC for you whether you go with a South Dakota or Montana plate.

How do I make (ANY) vehicle street legal?

Install all of the street-legal parts on your vehicle and then place your order online on our website here. Then sign/notarize the forms that we will mail you and send them back with your vehicle documents and copy of your photo ID. You will receive a license plate a few weeks later (Unless financing, then expect 3-8 weeks).

Have you registered (ANY) vehicle in (ANY) state?

Yes, we have registered similar vehicles in your state before by providing an out-of-state license plate and haven't had any issues. We can definitely get this vehicle registered for you as long as you have the proper paperwork such as a title or bill of sale.

After using your services, how do I transfer/sell the plate/tag to the new owner/buyer when selling the vehicle?

To transfer the vehicle to the new owner as street legal, simply have the buyer purchase our street legal registration service and go through the same process that you originally did. We will then transfer the title to the new owner and provide them with a new license plate and registration in their name.

If the buyer lives in a state where they can register the vehicle on the road, then they should be able to do that at their local DMV.

What will my off-road vehicle be titled as by using your service?

Dirt Bike South Dakota Plate

The title in South Dakota will simply show "off-road", as it was originally an off-road vehicle. It gets registered as a motorcycle and will be labeled "off-road licensed Motorcycle" in the DMV system, which means converted from off-road to street legal. Don't confuse this with the vehicle not being road worthy, as it's registered as a motorcycle and this is shown on the registration. it IS NOT an off-road registration. It is a street-legal motorcycle registration.

The title usually cannot be transferred to other states as street-legal UNLESS that state has a process for registering dirt bikes on the road. However, you can ride it in any state as many of our customers do without any issues. Even if the title did not say off-road on it, it would not matter as most states have the ability to run the VIN to see if the vehicle was originally made for off-road use.

Dirt Bike Montana Plate

Titled as a motorcycle

ATV/UTV South Dakota Plate

With a South Dakota plate, it will be titled as a 4 wheel motorcycle and will be labeled "off-road licensed Motorcycle" in the DMV system, which means converted from off-road to street legal. The title will simply say off-road, but it will still be registered for road use. The registration is what matters for the classification, not the title. You can still drive the vehicle in other states.

ATV/UTV Montana Plate

With a Montana plate, it will be titled as a "Quadracycle" and the title will usually say "Street Legal" on it, meaning it was converted from off-road.

The title cannot be transferred to other states as street-legal UNLESS that state has a process for registering ATVs/UTVs on the road. However, you can ride it in any state as many of our customers do without any issues.

Military Vehicles Montana Plate

A military vehicle will be titled and registered as a truck with no restrictions.

The title cannot be transferred to other states as street-legal UNLESS that state has a process for registering military vehicles on the road. However, you can ride it in any state as many of our customers do without any issues.

Do you sell the street legal parts? Where can I buy the equipment?

We do not currently sell the parts to make a vehicle street legal. We just provide a service to do the registration which requires no vehicle inspections. It is your responsibility to install all of the street-legal parts on your vehicle.

You can find the parts at your local Powersports dealer or online on sites like Amazon and eBay.

Can I keep my title?

Your title is needed to transfer to another state so we can get it licensed and registered. You will receive a new out-of-state title once our service is completed.

What banks do you work with if I am financing my vehicle? Do you work with my bank?

We are able to work with almost all banks except Synchrony bank at this time. We have not worked with every bank, but we have no problem working with new banks and we do so on a daily basis. If you have the certificate of origin (MCO) or title in hand, then we won't even have to work with your bank to get it registered for you. This will save you 2-6 weeks to get a plate.

Do you need photos of the street legal parts installed?

No photos are needed of the vehicle, but if you only have a bill of sale, we will need a photo of the VIN.

Can my vehicle be impounded?

Unless you are driving recklessly or breaking the law in some other way, your vehicle cannot be legally impounded.

However, if the cop doesn't like that you have an off-road converted ATV/UTV, then they could try to make you tow it home.

Does my bike need to have a VIN to get registered?

A motorcycle/dirt bike MUST have a VIN or serial number to qualify for registration and/or titling. If the bike is custom built, contact us and we can assist you. If the bike was mass produced, it should have a VIN or serial number. On older bikes, the serial number may be listed on the motor. If that is the case, we can use that number for registration and titling.

Do I have to install the street legal parts on the vehicle?

While the DMV does not require inspections, it is your responsibility to install the necessary street legal parts on your vehicle before driving it on the road.

If you get pulled over and do not have the proper equipment, you could be ticketed.

Why can't I register an off-road vehicle in my state?

Many states won't register any vehicle manufactured for off-road use. To determine if a vehicle was made for off-road use, you can check the MCO (certificate of origin) which will say something like:

- "Off-highway only"

- "Off-road vehicle"

- "For competition use only"

- "Not to be registered"

- "Not for use on public roads or highways. Such use is prohibited by law"

- "This off-road vehicle is not intended for and may not be registered for on-road use"

- "Not for highway use"

- "For use off-highway only in competition on a closed course"

Some states allow certain off-road vehicles to be registered, such as military vehicles, golf carts, dirt bikes, and UTVs. An inspection may or may not be required.

Some states allow certain off-road vehicles to be registered under specific circumstances, such as for event use only (commonly seen for military vehicles), or for roads up to 35mph speed limits (commonly seen with golf carts).

Some cities and states do not even require the vehicle to be registered to be driven on the roads. For example, golf carts in certain towns in Florida can be driven on the road without being registered with the DMV.

Do I need to set up an LLC or register my vehicle to an LLC?

No, but it is recommended to register your vehicle to an out-of-state LLC because then you can not be hassled for having an out-of-state plate after 30 days in your state. With an LLC being the owner of the vehicle, they cannot force you to transfer the plate, as the LLC is not a resident of your state.

U-haul is a prime example of this. All U-hauls are registered in Arizona due to low registration costs.

Dirt Bike & E-Bike

I live in (ANY) state, how do I make my dirt bike street legal?

You make your dirt bike street legal by placing your order on our website, and then signing/notarizing the forms we send you. Then send those to us via mail or email along with your title/bill of sale and we will then send your documents to the DMV and they will then mail you a license plate and registration with a new title.

See our dirt bike options here.

Can you register a Sur Ron or other E-bike as a moped?

A Sur Ron or similar high-powered e-bikes meet the definition of a motorcycle, therefore they cannot be registered as a moped and you will need a motorcycle license to operate it on the street once it's registered.

Keep in mind these bikes are supposed to be registered by law as they do not meet the legal definition of an electric bicycle, however, since these bikes are fairly new, this is rarely enforced.

UTV & Roxor

What service is best for my UTV?

The best service for you depends on your situation.

If you have not paid sales tax and your vehicle purchase price or NADA average retail value is over $20,000, we recommend our Montana LLC UTV service, as you will save money by not having to pay the sales tax since Montana has a 0% tax rate. With this service, we will also set up an LLC for you which means you will never be obligated to transfer the tag/title over to your state after 30 days since you will not be the owner of the vehicle. Instead, your LLC will own the vehicle. Though the 30-day transfer rule is rarely enforced.

If you have already paid the sales tax, you can use our UTV street legal service and we can register it under an LLC for an additional fee HERE. With this service, an LLC is not required, unlike Montana.

Mini Truck

Can you register a mini truck?

YES! We can register any mini truck in Montana with any ownership document. If you have a title, foreign title, or a bill of sale, we can get your mini truck on the streets here.

TITLING SERVICES

All Titling

Can I transfer the out-of-state tag/plate/title to my state after using your service?

Once you receive the out-of-state proof of ownership from us, you should have no problem transferring it to your state if your vehicle is factory street legal. If it was manufactured for off-road use then you may not be able to transfer it to your state as street legal.

We cannot guarantee that it will transfer though, but in most cases, it will. It's best to check with your local DMV to see what they would require for an out-of-state title transfer.

Can/How do I get a title for my (ANY) vehicle?

With just a bill of sale, we can get your vehicle titled with our vehicle titling service, as long as it doesn't have a lien, active theft, or junk/parts only branding. If it has a salvage or rebuilt title, then you will receive a title with that same branding on it.

To obtain a title with our services, simply place the order on our website and sign the forms that we mail you, and then return them to us with your bill of sale. We will handle the DMV process for you and you will receive a title document in the mail within 4-8 weeks.

Are there inspections?

There are no vehicle inspections to verify that the vehicle is in operational condition. However, your vehicle may require a VIN inspection if it meets the criteria below. A VIN inspection is just to verify that the VIN hasn't been tampered with and that the vehicle is not stolen.

-Motorcycles without a title which are 2008 and newer and over 300cc, or ANY motorcycle over 500cc, regardless of year

-Cars without a title which are 2008 and newer

I have a salvage title or certificate of destruction/junk title, can you make it a clean title?

If you have a car or motorcycle with a salvage title, we can register it for you. If you have a military vehicle with a salvage title, we cannot register it. You will still receive a salvage title/ownership document. IT WILL NOT BECOME A CLEAN TITLE, as it is not possible or legal to remove the salvage branding.

If your vehicle is branded as COD/Junk/Parts only, we cannot register or title it.

To register the vehicle in your state, you will have to bring this document and your vehicle to an inspection office in order for it to become a rebuilt title.

Can you register/title a vehicle that has a salvage title?

If you have a car or motorcycle with a salvage title, we can register it for you. If you have a military vehicle with a salvage title, we cannot register it. You will still receive a salvage title/ownership document. IT WILL NOT BECOME A CLEAN TITLE, as it is not possible or legal to remove the salvage branding.

If your vehicle is branded as COD/Junk/Parts only, we cannot register or title it.

To register/title the vehicle in your state, you will have to bring your title document and your vehicle to an inspection office in order for it to become a rebuilt title.

With a salvage title do I still have to pay the NADA book value of a clean title?

Since it will be a South Dakota tag, the taxes will be based on the BOS/Purchase agreement, not NADA. If no BOS is provided then it will be based on the NADA.

We don't register salvage titles in any other states

Can a bonded title be transferred/sold?

You can still sell your car while it has a bonded title, although you'll need to disclose to any potential buyers that the car has a bonded title. The person who purchased the bonded title will remain responsible for the surety bond until the title becomes clear.

Motorcycle Titling

Will I get a title with the motorcycle title service?

Yes, you will receive a Montana title with our service. You can ride or sell it using the title and registration we give you, or you can transfer it to your state.

Import Titling

My car is less than 25 years old. Can you still title/register it?

Yes if you have a bill of sale we can title it for you using our title recovery service.

Learn more here →

Can you title a vehicle that's in another country?

We can title an imported vehicle if it's already been imported. We cannot help someone with importing their vehicle to the USA.

ALL LLC SERVICES

Montana LLC Car/Truck Registration

What if I have a lien/financing on the title?

You cannot have a lien to register under a Montana LLC, because the bank won't allow you to change owners, which is required with this process, as you will no longer be the vehicle owner, instead, your LLC will own the vehicle.

You can pay off the vehicle by getting a loan through a company like Lightstream or your local credit union.

All LLC Questions

What is the difference with the Montana LLC UTV service and the UTV street legal service?

Montana Registration

- No yearly plate renewals for motorcycles, ATVs, and UTVs. The plate is PERMANENT meaning no registration sticker is needed and neither are yearly renewals.

- There is an annual LLC renewal fee to keep the LLC active, which is generally $150

0% sales tax. If you have not paid sales tax on your vehicle, you will not have to pay any sales tax when registering in Montana.

- You cannot be financing, so the vehicle must be paid off. We will need the title.

- An LLC is mandatory with Montana unless you are a Montana resident.

- A Montana address will be provided for you at no extra cost

- If you have not paid sales tax and your vehicle purchase price or the NADA average retail value is $20,000 or more, the Montana plate will be cheaper.

- ATVs & UTVs will be registered as quadricycles

South Dakota Registration

- 4% sales tax on the vehicle purchase price or NADA average retail value, but only if at least 4% tax hasn't yet been paid to the dealership or your local DMV.

- The registration must be renewed yearly at around $69 per year which can be done on our website.

- Registering a vehicle under an LLC instead of your name is optional if the vehicle isn't financed, but it does get you around the 30-60 day transfer rule which is rarely enforced. The cost for us to set up an LLC is usually around $299.

- The price is usually around $499 if registering in your name, and $799 if registering under an LLC vs the $1295 for Montana.

- You can use your home address for the registration or get an SD address by using America's Mailbox, but it is optional.

- ATVs & UTVs will be registered as 4-wheel motorcycles

To insure a vehicle registered under an LLC, you will insure it in your name with a policy from your state and you will add the LLC as an "Additional interest." No commercial policy is needed.

Please see our site for current pricing.

Do I have to file taxes with my LLC?

Your LLC is classified as an ASSET HOLDING LLC, not a REVENUE GENERATING LLC, therefore, no taxes will have to be filed.

What if there is a lien/financing on the title?

You cannot have a lien to register under a Montana LLC, because the bank won't allow you to change owners, which is required with this process, as you will no longer be the vehicle owner, instead, your LLC will own the vehicle.

You can pay off the vehicle by getting a loan through a company like Lightstream or your local credit union.

What should my LLC name be?

Your LLC name SHOULD NOT contain words like "Recovery", "Towing", or similar as it could cause issues getting personal insurance.

Will my LLC need to be renewed?

If you have a Montana plate, your LLC will need to be renewed yearly which is $125 as of 4/24/23. With a plate from any other state that's registered to an LLC, there will only be a registration renewal fee which is roughly $70.

What vehicles can be registered under an LLC?

Any non-financed vehicle such as a car, motorcycle, boat, jet ski, or off-road vehicle can be registered under an LLC.

Do I need to sign the title as myself or the LLC?

Since we will have power of attorney, we can take care of signing documents for you.

Do I need commercial insurance with the LLC process?

No, you will get a policy in your name and your state with the LLC added as an additional interest. It will not be a commercial policy.

What happens if I get pulled over?

If you were to get pulled over, you will simply show your valid license, registration, and insurance and explain the vehicle is registered out of state and is owned by an out-of-state LLC that you are the manager of.

They will be able to run the plate on their computer to verify that the vehicle has a valid registration.

Which state do I insure my vehicle in?

The insurance policy will be from your state, in your name with the LLC as an additional interest with a policy from your state.

REGISTRATION & TITLING

General Questions

How am I able to use an out-of-state tag/plate on my vehicle?

The states we use to register vehicles do not require you to be a resident. therefore you are able to renew the plate yearly. It is common to see an out-of-state plate on a vehicle unless it is very unique, so it is unlikely that you will be hassled based on our experience.

However, we do provide a service to register the vehicle under an LLC which we set up for you which will get around any requirements in your state to transfer the plate over after 30 days.

Do I need insurance? If so, what type of insurance? (All Services/Vehicles)

You will need a policy from your state, not the state the license plate will be from, that covers you for road use and meets your state's minimum requirements.

If your vehicle is being registered under an LLC, you will simply insure it in your name, and add the LLC as an additional interest. A commercial policy is not needed. To check out our recommended insurance options, click here.

My title is not properly signed over. Can you still register/title my vehicle?

Yes, we can assist you. The process and price will depend on if we are able to use your existing title or if we have obtain a new title for your vehicle. It's best to send us photos of your documents first so we can see which option will be best for you.

What is a power of attorney form/why do I need to sign one?

A vehicle power of attorney is a form that allows us permission to title/register your vehicle on your behalf so you don't have to deal with the DMV. We will send you this form after purchasing for you to sign and notarize.

Do I need to be a resident of the USA to use your services?

If your vehicle is in the USA and you can provide a US address, then in most cases we can assist you. It is best to email us with photos of the documents you have for the vehicle so we can figure out the best option for you.

Do I have to send you the title for my vehicle?

Since we have to transfer the title to another state in order to register and license it, the DMV requires the ACTUAL title, not a copy.

How do I get my vehicle insured?

You will insure your vehicle with a policy in your home state, using your garaging address (address where the vehicle will be parked) - nothing special needs to be done. If your insurance company will not insure it since it has an out of state plate, click here to check out our recommended insurance options.

What if I have neither a title NOR a bill of sale for my vehicle?

The DMV will AT LEAST need a bill of sale to prove that you acquired the vehicle lawfully. If you do not have a bill of sale, you will have to sell the vehicle to someone and then buy it back from them, and then have them write you a bill of sale. This could be a friend or family member. You will now have a bill of sale and can proceed with registering your vehicle using our services.

Do I have to go to my DMV if I use your services?

No, we handle the entire process for you out of state, and you will not need to do anything at your local DMV.

What if the title isn't in my name? Does the title have to be in my name?

The title does not have to be in your name. As long as the title is signed over to you, meaning you signed as the buyer and the previous owner signed as the seller, then we can handle the title transfer/registration for you.

Do you have a refund policy/guarantee?

Yes, you can find our refund policy at the bottom of our site. We have a 100% money-back guarantee as long as you provide all the documents we require and the vehicle is not stolen nor has a lien on it unless the lien is in your name.

If you are not able to provide all documents required, then we are only able to do a partial refund which is determined based on the situation. Generally, we will only keep $50 for our time spent doing the paperwork and refund the rest.

Is your company legitimate?

You can read our 400+ reviews on Facebook and Google.

Do I need a bill of sale?

If you have a title, then a bill of sale is not needed as long as you signed as the buyer and the previous owner signed as the seller.

Do I need an out of state address to use your service?

No, you do not need an out-of-state address unless you use our Montana LLC registration service, in which case we will provide you with a Montana address for no extra charge.

Do I have to pay sales tax? What if I already paid it?

If you have PAID at least 4-6% sales tax depending on the state we register your vehicle in or are using the Montana LLC service, then you will not owe any additional sales tax. We will need proof of tax paid unless using the Montana service.

If you HAVE NOT paid at least 4-6% sales tax on the purchase price or NADA value (shown below, whichever is higher), then you will owe sales tax to us so we can remit it to the DMV. We will include the exact amount on the forms we will mail you and we can also give you an exact quote over the phone.

Cars 2003 and newer: Clean Retail

All off-road vehicles, motorcycles, and cars 2002 and older: Average Retail

Can I do this process myself?

Yes, you can, however, you will have to complete all of the DMV paperwork and mail the documents into the DMV and you will have to wait up to 4 weeks to determine if you sent the correct paperwork or not.

With our services, we will get the paperwork correctly the first time and we actually go to the DMV in person to expedite the process which saves 2-4 weeks of waiting.

Are your services legal?

What is a VIN inspection and how do I get it done?

A VIN inspection is when someone visually verifies that the vehicle VIN has not been modified or tampered with. This inspection can be done by any police officer or DMV in ANY state. The vehicle DOES NOT have to be in operating condition. In most states, the police will come to you to verify the VIN if you call them. This IS NOT an equipment inspection.

We will provide an already pre-filled form that you will just need to get completed by the VIN verifier. Make sure you obtain a business card from whoever does the inspection.

Depending on your state, you can simply call your local police department and have them come out to your location to inspect the VIN. In some states like CA there are traveling VIN verifiers in the state that can come to you.

Will my address be on the title/registration?

This will depend on the service you choose.

If you purchase the Montana LLC service, we will provide a Montana address that will be used on all documents, however your home address may be listed as the mailing address on the title/registration unless you choose to use our address.

Will I have to pay taxes yearly when renewing the registration?

No, you will just pay the registration renewal fee which can be done on our website HERE.

Do I need a drivers license from (State of license plate) to use your services?

No, you will just need a valid driver's license which can be from your state or any other state, just make sure it is not expired.

Will I get hassled for having an out of state plate/tag in MY (ANY) state?

It is unlikely you will be hassled, as it is common to see out-of-state plates in most areas. If you think your cops will hassle you, we recommend using our LLC service which you can do as long as you aren't financing your vehicle.

With the LLC service, you can not be legally ticketed for having an out-of-state plate since an LLC will be the owner of the vehicle and not you personally since the LLC is not a resident of your state.

U-haul is a prime example of this. All U-hauls are registered in Arizona due to low registration costs.

How do you send the documents to me? Is it by mail or email?

We normally mail the documents, but if you request them to be emailed, we will email them to you with a return pre-paid shipping label for you to mail the completed documents back to us so we can complete the process. Please note that you will have to print the forms that we email you.

Will I receive a title if I am financing my vehicle?

An out-of-state license plate can only be revoked by the issuing state. Your state has no authority to revoke an out-of-state license plate.

If your license plate gets taken by the police, it will have been done so illegally and you will simply be able to contact us to receive a duplicate license plate.

What if my vehicle doesn't have/ no VIN or I can't find the VIN on the vehicle?

If the vehicle has a serial number on the motor or frame, we may be able to use that to register the vehicle. If there are no identifying numbers on the vehicle, you will need to obtain a VIN from your DMV, which the process would look something like this:

1) Apply for a VIN

2) Take Your Car For Inspection

3) Pay the Inspection Fees

4) Then You will be given a verification form that you will need to register your car at your nearest motor vehicles agency office

After I've used your services, how do I transfer/sell the plate/tag to the new owner/buyer when selling the vehicle? (NOT FOR OHVs)

You can simply bring the signed over proof of ownership document to your DMV to get it transferred to your name. If they will not accept it, let us know and we will try to assist you.

If your DMV still won't accept it for some reason, we can register the vehicle in your name and provide a license plate, registration and new proof of ownership document to you.

What is a bonded title?

It is a document that establishes who owns a car. A bonded title can be used instead of a traditional car title to register a vehicle with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), get insurance for the vehicle, or sell the vehicle.

Bonded titles are available in most states for a variety of vehicles, including automobiles, buses, motorhomes, and motorcycles. Why does this vehicle have a bonded title? When a car title is lost or damaged, there is no way to verify that the person in charge of the car was the lawful owner. Because they wouldn’t be able to transfer the title ordinarily, they’d have to go through the procedure of obtaining a bonded title, which would include purchasing a surety bond.

A bonded title is one that contains a surety bond to ensure the car owner’s legal ownership. A car owner assumes legal and financial responsibility for the accuracy of their assertions about the car when they purchase a bonded title.

What is the definition of a surety bond? A surety bond is a contract between 3 parties by which one party, the surety, guarantees the performance or obligations of a second party, the principal, to a third party, the obligee. A surety bond is a guarantee to be liable for any debt, default, or failure of the principal.

The DMV or another affected party can make a claim against the title bond if the principal misrepresents any aspect of their ownership of the vehicle. The principal is liable for reimbursing the surety for any claims paid by the surety for damages.

Does the bill of sale need to be from the last registered owner?

No, it just needs to be from the person you bought it from. The DMV does not need to verify the last registered owner.

Do I need to have the bill of sale notarized?

No, it just needs to be signed by the seller. Below are the bill of sale requirements:

-Buyer and seller name

-Buyer and seller signature

-Purchase price

-Purchase date

-Vehicle VIN

-Vehicle Year, make, model

Can Dirt Legal register a vehicle with a title that says "For Export Only"?

No, we cannot register a vehicle with a title that has a stamp stating "FOR EXPORT ONLY".

What if I unknowingly bought a stolen vehicle?

If you purchased a vehicle that you find out is stolen, it is best to return it to the seller for a refund if possible. If that isn't possible, you may have to contact law enforcement about the issue.

You may have to take the seller to court in order to get a refund.

Do I still have to pay tax if I did a trade-in for the vehicle?

You will get credit for a trade-in up to the value of the vehicle you traded. If it's at least the same value as what you traded for, no tax will be due, otherwise, you will owe the difference in sales tax.

Keep in mind the DMV will require proof of the trade-in. The trade-in vehicle must have been titled in your name and the trade-in must be clearly shown on a bill of sale with the year, make, model, and VIN of both vehicles and the trade amount whether it was a partial trade or even trade.

If you traded the vehicle into a dealer, you may still have to pay sales tax if the trade doesn't cover the ENTIRE amount that the dealer charged.

Can I have an out of state address listed on the registration instead of my home address?

Yes, you can use a mailbox service like https://americasmailbox.com/ or a UPS store in the state we will register your vehicle in. Once you have the out of state address, simply place the order using that new address and we will list that on the registration and title for you.

Can I get a salvage/rebuilt vehicle insured?

Yes, you can get insurance that meets the requirements of your state, however, you will not be able to get comprehensive or collision coverage, which means if the vehicle is in an accident, the vehicle will not be covered.

Be sure to obtain a policy in your home state, using your garaging address (Address where the vehicle will be parked), Nothing special needs to be done. If your insurance company will not insure it since it has an out-of-state plate, click here to check out our recommended insurance options.
